Anthony Cusumano, age 40, Herriman, Utah, was born on April 8, 1974 in Staten Island, N.Y. and passed away on Aug. 21, 2014 following a year-long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Katherine Beus Cusumano; his daughter Carina Rose Cusumano, age 4; his son Anthony Joseph Cusumano, age 2; his father Giuseppe Cusumano and mother Phyllis Rose Cusumano; and his brother Salvatore Cusumano.
Anthony will be greatly missed by his family and friends who came to know him over the years in New York, Central California, Utah, and Sicily. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1992 and received a BA in Journalism and a minor in Criminal Justice from Sacramento State in 1996. He later received K-12 Administrative Credential and a Master in Educational Leadership and Policy in 2011 from the University of Utah.
Anthony spent the early years of his career as an award-winning journalist, primarily as a sports writer at various newspapers in the California Central Valley, including the Manteca Bulletin, Tracy Press and the Stockton Record. He made a successful career change into education in 2005 when he chose to become a 4th grade school teacher.
After meeting his wife, Anthony was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Katherine Beus on Nov. 24, 2006 and the two chose to move to Utah.
After settling in Herriman, he taught at Midvale Elementary. He loved his students and teaching. In his spare time, he continued to be a freelance writer. He wrote for the Salt Lake Tribune, the Deseret News, and the Valley Journals.
He thoroughly enjoyed his 18 years of sports writing, and bringing readers the stories of area high school athletes in multiple sports. He was highly respected for his ability to cover a wide range of sporting events, and for the rapport he established with athletes, coaches, athletic directors, as well as other sports writers. He truly had a love for sports, and followed the Denver Broncos and New York Yankees. Other hobbies included cooking, traveling, and participating in fantasy sports leagues.
Anthony loved life and was a fun person to be around. He loved children and most of all spending time with his wife and two children. He was serving as an Assistant Ward Clerk for the Herriman Rose First Ward, and enjoyed serving.
A memorial service will be Saturday, August 30, 2014, 10:00 am at the Herriman Rose LDS Building, 13122 South Herriman Rose Blvd., Herriman, Utah.
