Annie Claus

February 27, 1918 — February 23, 2015

Johanna Elizabeth Kalishoek Claus (Annie) was born February 27, 1918 in Rotterdam, Netherlands to Carel Kalishoek and Geertruida Eggelmeijer. She passed away peacefully on February 23, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She wanted to live to be 100, but died just shy of her 97th birthday.
She married Adrianus Pieter Claus (Pete) in The Hague, Netherlands August 14, 1940. They had six children. First three boys; Frits, Frank and Hans, and then three girls; Ann, Sylvia and Shirley.
In April of 1952, Annie, Peter, and their five little children, (Frits being 10, and Sylvia almost 4) immigrated to the United States by boat, and then a long bus ride to Salt Lake City. The only American baby, Shirley was born a month later. They bravely faced this challenge to bring their children up in Zion.
Annie, although only 5 ft. tall, can be described as strong, hard-working, out-spoken, thrifty, and very independent. Her beautiful knitted and crocheted handiwork won blue ribbons at the Utah State Fair year after year.
She loved to cook, and was still baking her famous Dutch butter cookies for friends shortly before her passing. While friends and family ate her tasty dishes, she relished their compliments.
Peter died in 1963 and she later married Thomas Legaspi Almazan Feb. 27, l978. He died Feb. 7 1995. His children have continued to bless her life and gave her much joy.
Annie loved the Gospel, and especially enjoyed reading about the latter-day prophets. Her all- time favorite was Thomas S. Monson, who had been Peter’s boss at Deseret News Press. When he sent her a birthday letter last year, she was so thrilled. She cherished it and showed it off to all who came to visit her.
She was preceded in death by her sons Frits and Frank. She is survived by four of her children, 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 9½ great-great grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, Feb. 27 at Lake Hills Memorial Park, 10055 South State St. Sandy, UT 84070. Viewing at 1:00 pm with graveside services at 2:00 pm.
