Alwyn Berry Larsen
1940 – 2022
Alwyn Berry Larsen, age 81, died peacefully on March 16, 2022 in Cottonwood Heights, Utah after a long battle with dementia. He was born November 26, 1940, the oldest of 10 children born to Alvie Smith and Mildred Berry Larsen. He married Karen Marietta Derbyshire July 26, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary three months before she passed away on October 26, 2013.
Alwyn attended East High School. He joined the Utah National Guard in the summer of 1959 and was stationed at Fort Ord, California for basic training for 6 months. He met Karen while attending Stevens-Henegar College in 1960. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission for the church in the California Mission, serving in Bakersfield, Oxnard, Norwalk and other areas. His church service was important to him and he served a variety of callings over the years including Young Men’s Counselor, Elder’s Quorum President, Stake Mission President and Ward Clerk. As a talented pianist, Alwyn’s favorite church callings were always callings involving music; Primary Pianist, Ward Organist, Priesthood Pianist, Ward Music Director and Ward Choir Director.
Alwyn worked for Utah Transit Authority for 30 years, mostly as a bus driver. After retiring from UTA, he worked for Orson Gygi for 10 years before permanently retiring in 2006. Alwyn enjoyed traveling with his family and watching various sports. While he did root for the U of U football team, the San Francisco 49ers football team and the San Francisco Giants baseball team, his favorite, by far, was the Utah Jazz. The most important thing in Alwyn’s life was his family. He spent countless hours watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the lights of his life.
Alwyn is survived by his children; Leesa (Duane) Moll and Matthew (Shelby) Larsen, 7 grandsons; Nick Gutierrez, Thomas (Caitlin) Moll, Tyler (Tanya) Moll, Timothy (Justin Markley) Moll, Austin Larsen, Jonathan Moll and Benjamin Moll, 3 granddaughters; Crystal (Travis) Christensen, Heather (Rick McCurdy) Herrera and Brittany (Saúl) De Avila, 5 great grandsons; Jessy (Karen), Gavin, Kaiden, Everett and Oliver, 6 great granddaughters, Stormie, Erika, Nikole, Kaylee, Harlee and Ava, one great-great grandson, Kaleb, 6 brothers; Thayne (Gayle), Kent (Barbara), Nile (Rochelle), Boyd (Shari), Mont (Connie) and Wendell (Nancy), 3 sisters; Annette Crabtree, Falene Loveland and Jerolyn Greenberg. He is also survived by 2 of his wife’s sisters; Janice Derbyshire and Margaret Morris and a sister-in-law, Glenda Derbyshire.
Preceded in death by his wife, his parents and his wife’s parents, granddaughter, Brandy Gutierrez and grandson, Randy Gutierrez. Also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law; Stephen Crabtree, Bradford Loveland and Ralph Greenberg, as well as his wife’s brother, 3 of her sisters and 4 brothers-in-law.
Our family would like to thank the wonderful people at The Wentworth at Willowcreek and Inspiration Hospice for the love and care they provided for Alwyn during the final 17 months of his life.
