Akira Fujinami

September 18, 1932 — April 16, 2015

Akira “Aki” Fujinami, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2015 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on September 18, 1932 to George Hichizo and Francis Shika Fujinami in Los Angeles, California. As a young child, he was relocated to Pomona Relocation and subsequently to Heart Mountain Relocation Center near Cody, Wyoming. When the family left internment they moved to Meridan, Wyoming.
Aki spent two years in the US Army and was sent to Japan in an amphibious battalion. When the amphibious battalion was deactivated, Aki was transferred to the 6th Tank Battalion of the 24th Division. After serving in the Korean War, he moved back to Los Angeles, California where he met his wife, Jane Mochizuki Fujinami. They were married on August 15, 1959 and resided in Los Angeles, California. Later they moved to Meridan, Wyoming and finally settled in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Aki lived a wonderful life and participated in many activities. He enjoyed the great outdoors in the state of Utah where he liked to ski, fish, golf and bowl. In his earlier years you could find him on the Park City ski slopes where we spent many weekends as a family. Later in life he enjoyed golfing and bowling as his main activities. In fact, he was able to golf 9 holes just two weeks prior to his passing. He had a zest for life that we all admire and he will be greatly missed by us all.
Aki is survived by his wife Jane, son Derek (Michelle) and daughter Cindi (Bob) Argyle; grandchildren Ashlee (Jeremy) Roberts, Danielle, Ryan and Madison Argyle; half-brothers Terry (Peggy), James (Debbie) and Victor (Cynthia) Fujinami; step-brother Akiharu (Sharon) Fujinami. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Shig and Hirichio, sister Yetsuko “Mae” (Shig) Shimizu and half-sister Ruby Fujinami.
