A. David Allen

October 18, 1940 — October 25, 2018

David Allen passed away peacefully on October 25, 2018, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born October 18, 1940 in Provo, Utah, the oldest of three children to A. Douglas and Ruth Hanks Allen.
He grew up in Hyrum, Utah and spent his high school years playing football at South Cache High School and working on the family farm in Hansel Valley. After two years at Utah State University, he served a mission in the New England States Mission. He graduated from Utah State in 1964 and during his senior year there met Janet Larson. They were married on August 7, 1964 in the Idaho Falls Temple. After graduate school at Oregon State University, David served in the military for two years with one year being deployed in Vietnam.
Upon finishing his graduate work, he was employed teaching mathematics, physical science and agricultural mathematics at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho for 38 years.  He was a very dedicated, rigorous, memorable professor and department head.  Under the direction of President Henry B. Eyring he developed a comprehensive agricultural program. David also greatly enjoyed working in instructional design with the administration at Ricks College. While at Ricks, he had the opportunity to work with and become friends with great men who greatly influenced him.
David loved to work, and he was dedicated to his businesses. Through the years, he renovated and rented apartments and houses. He developed commercial properties and manufacturing spaces. He loved attending auctions and buying equipment, fixing it and selling it. He was a prolific gardener, a tireless wood hauler, a sandblaster and an endless problem solver. He could work harder and longer than any of his children with a positive attitude.
David and Janet raised four daughters and one son: Ruth A. Nichols (Tony), Jennifer Hunsaker (Mikal), Ann Marie Schroader (Paul), Andrew David Allen (Juvenal Garcia), and Abigail Salisbury, all with college degrees, who are gainfully employed with exceptional work ethics.
David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 51. He continued teaching until he took early retirement, so he and Janet could serve a mission in the Honolulu Hawaii Mission. They served the Marshallese people with David supporting Janet in their calling of piano instruction. Throughout his life, David was a great example of service in many leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as bishop, as regional physical facilities representative, on the high council and in the stake presidency.   His favorite calling was Gospel Doctrine teacher.
We wish to thank the staff of the William E. Christofferson Salt Lake Veterans Home for many years of exceptional service and care. Activities of daily living, ski trips, fishing trips, temple sessions and game attendance would not have been possible otherwise. They made a great difference in his quality of life.
David is survived by his wife, Janet.  He is remembered by siblings and their families: Stanley D. Allen (Karen) and Carol Ann Lemon (Alvin); his children, 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
